Tetris

Tetris or Tetorisu is one of the first games in Gameboy. This puzzle game has been released at the same year, 1989, when the said gaming console was launched. In fact, Gameboy was sold either standalone or bundled with a Tetris game. It was derived from the original Tetris of Alexey Pajitnov.

The game involves tetrominoes, which are shapes with four square blocks. These tetrominoes fall down on the field and players need to manage these blocks to make a horizontal line without a gap. The blocks can be manipulated by rotating them to 90 degrees in order to fit the field. When the player is able to make a horizontal line, the line will disappear. The game will be over when the tetrominoes that were not cleared filled up the screen.

Tetris started as black and white, but the blocks become colored when it was released together with the Gameboy Color. There are even versions of Tetris wherein the blocks are visually enhanced to make it modernized.

Super Mario Land

Super Mario Bros is a well-known game which started back in 1985. This game from Nintendo has been enhanced to make it compatible with Gameboy. Hence, the gaming company released the Super Mario Land in 1989.

Super Mario Land is the first ever Mario game that has been made for a handheld console. The characters are much improved to fit the small screen of Gameboy. Similar with the original Mario, Super Mario Land is an adventure game where Mario tries to save Princess Daisy. The whole game takes place in Sarasaland, which features new setting that bears stunning graphics and designs.

This version has been a huge success for Nintendo as it was able to sold more than 18 million copies of the game. Following the victory of this release, Nintendo launched two more sequels of the game. The second was Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins which was released in 1992 and the third was Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 which was released in 1994.

The Legend of Zelda

Fans of fantasy games are surely familiar with The Legend of Zelda. This classic game has been running since 1986, but its charm seems to never fade at all. In fact, the latest version of this fantasy adventure game was released in March 2017.

The Legend of Zelda's story revolves around Link, who is the main character of the game. His goal is to rescue the kingdom of Hyrule and save the beautiful Princess Zelda. During the game, players may encounter the main antagonist of the game named Ganon. The storyline of this game is so much appealing to the players. The plot usually involves Triforce, which is a divine artifact composed of three golden triangles representing power, wisdom, and courage.

The game is also franchised to make an American animated series for television. The characters of the game also had cross over with other Nintendo games. The Legend of Zelda even sold 80 million copies. This only proves the unending popularity of The Legend of Zelda.

Pokémon Red and Blue

Ready the pocket monsters as we talk about the Pokemon Red and Blue. This game has been released in 1996. It features the different pocket monsters that are prepared for battles.

The player's main goal here is to be declared as the Indigo League champion. It can only be done by defeating the eight (8) gym leaders. Aside from fighting the gym leaders, the aspiring champion should also win over the Elite Four, which consists of the top four (4) Pokemon trainers. The players are given Pokedex, a gadget that serves as encyclopedia containing the information about all the Pokemons. Players should also complete the Pokedex during the game by getting 150 Pokemons.

Pokemon Green and Pokemon Yellow are also released, but the Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue are the ones that become so famous among all the versions. These two received great reviews and feedback from the game critics. It has been included in the Guinness Book of World Records as the bestselling RPG on Gameboy.

Donkey Kong

Inspired from the 1981 arcade game, Donkey Kong for Gameboy has been a great game for all ages. It has been developed in 1994 by Nintendo. The player's main goal here is to help Mario in rescuing Pauline from Donkey Kong. Interestingly, the game also shows Donkey Kong Jr. who tries to help his father in hindering Mario from his goal.

The game has four initial levels. Every time Mario saves Pauline in the each level, Donkey Kong will grab her again and move to the next game. This popular game also got its sequel entitled Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis.
